MOTHER OF TEARS - THE PIT OF HORROR REVIEW -- [Posted 27th June 2008]
An ancient urn is found in a cemetery outside Rome.
Once opened, it triggers a series of violent
incidents: robberies, rapes and murders increase
dramatically, while several mysterious, evil-looking
young women coming from all over the world are
gathering in the city. All these events are caused by
the return of Mater Lacrimarum, the last of three
powerful witches who have been spreading terror and
death for centuries. Alone against an army of psychos
and demons, Sarah (Asia Argento) Manni, an art student
who seems to have supernatural abilities of her own,
is the only person left to prevent the Mother of Tears
from destroying Rome.
And there you have the third entry in Argento's "Three
Mothers" trilogy, that brings Argento back to form.
Lets face it, his last few films have not been so
good. Even his Masters of Horror entry was lacking.
But, astonishingly the maestro kicks it into high gear
from the first frame of the Suspiria/Inferno sequel
and Argento rarely lets up from there.
Among the many sights on display in Dario Argento’s
Mother of Tears are a hissing monkey, hooded
occultists, a smiling mother drops her baby off a
bridge, intestines employed as an impromptu noose,
barbed wire sex, and the sexiest witch I have ever
seen... oh and my girl, Asia Argento. It’s clear from
the get go that no one thing is safe or sacred in this
final, long-gestating installment of the director's
"Three Mothers" trilogy.
Creating a chaotic thrill ride of a movie, it's an
amazing horror film, sick as hell, and should be on
the must see list of every true fan of horror.
