I took my time in writing this review up because this
short in the anthology Masters of Horror is my
favorite thus far, as I expected it might. I have
heard John Carpenter's 'Cigarette Burns' is the best,
but that doesn't air until December 16th, and we will
come back to that for sure.
In Dario Argento's 'Jenifer', we open with detective
Frank (Steven Weber) Spivey who happens upon a mute
woman who is about to be hacked up with a meat
cleaver. Frank blows the crazed man away, but still
manages to utter the word 'Jenifer'. When Frank
finally gets a good look at Jenifer, he notices that
she has big black alien eyes, talons for fingernails,
fangs, and an amazing body to boot.
Frank gets home, takes a look at his hand and notices
that he has a scratch on his hand that is obviously
affecting the way he sees Jenifer, because rather than
take his horny wife to bed and make love to her, he
rapes her, imagining that she is the whiny beast
Jenifer. He then decides it would be better for the
family if he moved her in? Could it get better? With
Argento directing, you can only imagine that it will.
After a follow up, he finds that she has been taken to
a mental institution. Frank takes Jenifer home to
protect her? The wife demands that Jenifer be taken
away to which Jenifer demonstrates her disdain for
Frank's 'ol ball and chain by biting her on the face.
So, instead of shipping her back to the mental
hospital, Frank fucks the shit out her in his car.
Things only get better after the fucking because Frank
then decides Jenifer is really moving in. Frank and
his wife argue, while Jenifer runs up the stairs and
promptly eats the family cat. Frank's wife and son
leave the house, and does Frank run after them? Not a
chance... .he opts for the beast with the hot body.
To make a long story short and keep the ending a
surprise, I will only say this... the episode only
gets better after Frank decides it would be best to
move he and beastie out to a cabin in the woods of a
small, rural town. So, as you all know I am a huge
Argento fan and 'Jenifer' just proves that not only is
he the Master, but the maestro of gore, shock, and
things that make you go OOOOOHHHH!!! Steven Weber
plays a good role in the short as Frank and actually
penned the screenplay. What the hell was going on in
his head when he wrote this? Argento is also right on
point with how most men would react in that situation.
The crazed girlfriend with the hot body who you just
can't dump off because the sex is just that damn good.
Also, 'Jenifer' brings new meaning to the term "looks
like you just ate the cat". You can catch 'Jenifer'
on Showtime all this month in multi-plays.
