Raimi Signs the Pang Bros for 'Scarecrow'!

Hong Kong horror maestros Oxide and Danny Pang ('The Eye,' 'The Eye 2') are set to make their English-language debut directing Scarecrow for Blue Star Pictures and Ghost House Pictures, a joint venture of Senator International, Sam Raimi and his producing partner Rob Tapert.

Written by Stuart Beattie ("Collateral") from an original script by Todd Farmer ("Jason X"), "Scarecrow" is a horror tale that follows the lives of a family moving into a run-down sunflower farm. As the farm begins to revive after years of disrepair, the family begins to notice uncomfortable and alarming changes in their father's behavior.

Principal photography is slated for the spring. "I'm thrilled that the Pang brothers have agreed to direct 'Scarecrow,' " Raimi said. "I've been a big fan ever since 'The Eye.' Danny and Oxide have an exciting and unique vision and are at the forefront of the neo-horror movement in Asian filmmaking."

Pumpkinhead III news!

Could a new misguided soul seeking revenge be calling up the demon once more for a third film? It looks like it. A reader recently pointed our attention in the direction of a website for a production company called Echelon Entertainment. Under their "in development/pre-sales" category Pumpkinhead III is listed with a $15 million budget and the original 1989 film's director Stan Winston and producer Bill Blake are cited as returning to the series...

...Dread Central did some digging around and talked to one source who wished to remain anonymous and tells us Echelon's listing is indeed the real deal. Winston and Blake are eyeing to resurrect Pumpkinhead, at the moment though, it's just a matter of when and finalizing . In essence, the demon is standing on shaky ground that could fall out from under him at any moment. But keep your fingers crossed that the project fully stabilizes."

'Resident Evil: Afterlife' news

With the success of Sony Screen Gems' Resident Evil: Apocalypse in its opening weekend, the movie's producers and Impact Pictures partners Jeremy Bolt and Paul W. S. Anderson believe that their story leads inexorably to Resident Evil: Afterlife, Anderson tells the Hollywood Reporter, "I always thought of the Resident Evil films as a trilogy," Anderson told The Hollywood Reporter. "The first film was a prequel to the game world. The new movie intersects the film and game worlds. And the third movie will act as a follow-up to the games. It's a nice arc -- prehistory, in-game and then a sequel to the games."

'Cursed' news. More Reshoots and Old Footage Becomes 'Cursed 2'?!

Moviehole writes: Craven for Wes Craven's newie? Well, you'll have to wait for it a little longer - word is more reshoots start on the film this week.

All the cast have to be reassembled to reshoot the finale, which has to be tweaked apparently. Funnily enough, lead star Christina Ricci has lost a considerable amount of weight since the film first started up - and now she's as thin as a wafer. Doesn't help that she's also cut her hair in recent times. But nothing that can't be fixed in Post.

Also on the film, word is they're going to use all those deleted scenes (i.e scenes that were shot for the first version of the film) for a sequel - I kid you not. "Cursed 2" is rumoured to be cut stuff from the first film with a little bit of new stuff mixed in.

George Romero's Land of the Dead news

When bloody-disgusting.com broke the news a few nights ago that George Romero's Land of the Dead would grace the big screens on October 21st, everyone else thought it would be a good idea to believe Fangoria, who reported a October 11th release. Well Film Jerk did the research and also reports that the film will hit on October 21st, 2005. They also report, that the film has been retitled to George Romero's Land of the Dead. So when you see the release date posted as October 11, that's a Tuesday- and I doubt it's going straight to video.

The Hub will keep you posted on the real date and also any news news on George Romero's Land of the Dead.

Shrader's 'Exorcist: The Beginning' maybe coming to theaters after all?

Davis DVD writes, "The fate of director Paul Shrader's much-debated version of 'The Exorcist' prequel is expected to be decided by month's end - and the film could end up seeing the big screen after all. Production company Morgan Creek hired Shrader to direct the movie, but after the $35 million-budgeted film was delivered, Morgan Creek decided it wanted an obviously scarier film than Shrader had envisioned. The studio then brought in Renny Harlin, and his $50 million-budgeted Exorcist: The Beginning bowed in theaters on August 20th.

"We are definitely leaning toward releasing [Shrader's version] in some form," said Guy McElwaine, president of Morgan Creek. "Paul was out here all last week and we talked about it a lot." Although the film could roll out directly to video, McElwaine said he is considering giving the film a limited theatrical launch first. Warner Home Video is expected to release Harlin's version, but no street date has been formally announced. "I would say it's more likely to be afterward [in 2005] sometime," said McElwaine, explaining that he'd prefer to be free of both the ultra-competitive Oscar theatrical season and the holiday DVD crunch. For his part, Shrader is optimistic that some answer will come shortly about finally delivering his film to an audience. "To my knowledge," the filmmaker said, "the decision is this week's business at Morgan Creek." (thanks to Video Business)

The New King of Horror Lions Gate Film is getting ready for 2005

Variety reports:

VENICE -- Lions Gate Entertainment has broken the acquisitions drought on the Lido, picking up North American rights to pan-Asian horror triptych "Three ... Extremes." Purchase is the first by a U.S. company at the 61st Venice Intl. Film Festival.

Premiered Monday in Venice's Midnight lineup, the film groups three macabre tales -- "Dumplings," "Cut" and "Box" -- from directors Fruit Chan, Park Chan-Wook and Takashi Miike.

Produced by Applause Pictures, Hong Kong, B.O.M. Film Prods. of Seoul and Kadokawa Pictures, Tokyo, "Three ... Extremes" follows commercially successful 2002 horror omnibus "Three," directed by Kim Jee-woon, Nonzee Nimibutr and Peter Ho-Sun Chan.

That pic, together with Hong Kong horror sequel "The Eye 2" by Danny and Oxide Pang, was acquired by Lions Gate Films this year from Fortissimo Films, which also handled sales on "Three .. Extremes."

"You can't say you are focusing on the horror genre without paying close attention to what is happening in Asian cinema," said Peter Block, Lions Gate Entertainment president of acquisitions and co-productions.

Fortissimo also closed distribution deals on the film with Tartan Films in the U.K., Wild Side Films in France, and A Films for Benelux. Applause Pictures is planning a third horror anthology to complete the trilogy.

'Alien 5' + 'Predator 3' news

You just can't kill a good franchise. Heck, you can't even kill a bad franchise.

Talking to an insider at FOX in Century City a couple of days back , I heard that there's high hopes for everything 'Alien' and 'Predator' - what with the pleasing B.O figures for "Aliens vs.Predator" and all. Despite not even being previewed for critics (probably just as well, I caught it yesterday and thought it sucked more than Pammy Anderson)the film has made quite a packet over the past couple of weeks, leaving FOX with a fat smile on their face and everyone who has got an idea for a sequel, spin-off or stand-alone movie very, very optimistic, if not giddy with possibility.

The plan is - new stand-alone "Predator" movies, new stand-alone "Alien" movies. No sequel to "AvP" at the moment. If anything, "AvP" was a way of a re-introducing these characters so that there could be new stand-alone films in their respective series. Never was it a plan to do a series of "AvP" movies.

One 'Predator 3' pitch that's been doing the rounds sounds stellar. It's set in snowy New York, and re-introduces Arnold Schwarzenegger's character, Dutch. You'd think the possibility of this one happening hinders on whether Schwarzenegger returns to the Governors chair but not necessarily, word is they think they could easily have someone else play the character from here on in. They picture 'Dutch' as being this big 'Riddick/Snake Plissken' esque character that will inevitably be more of a drawcard than the monster itself.

The script's apparently hotter than the Californian Sun. Best of all, for the studio, it leaves it open for a "Predator 4" - which is rumoured to feature a female rogue.

As for "Alien", the latest is that it'll be a Ridley Scott - Sigourney Weaver re-team. Talk is underway, but it's still early days. Wouldn't be surprised if it's hurried though.

Talking of sturdy storylines, the idea for a new "Dirty Harry" that I heard today - over at Warner - is just brilliant. I won't say too much, but let's just say it flips back to the original film, and it's Clint Eastwood playing 'old' Harry, in a sort of 'Dark Knight Returns' vein. Hoping that baby happens.

Lastly, the script for a "Jurassic Park 4" is apparently near finished. Speaking at a Q & A session, sfx master Stan Winston revealed that it's nearly time to go on the fourth chapter. No word yet on whether David Boreanaz is actually attached or not though, as rumoured.

Kirzinger talks FJA:

The next battle between horror icons Freddy Kruger (Nightmare on Elm Street) and Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) will feature a nemesis who may prove a match for them both; Sam Raimi's wisemouthed, egocentric Ash, from the "Evil Dead" series.

"They're just crossing the Ts and dotting the Is," said Ken Kirzinger, the current man behind the hockey mask. "New Line is excited; they think that it'll be great to have someone who can banter with Freddy, while I stand there and just think, 'Will you two just shut up while I kill you??!!'"

Both Kirzinger and Robert Englund confirmed the forward momentum in interviews at this weekend's "Monster Mania" horror film convention.

Freddy has never had any real competition in the snappy patter department before and is now almost as famous for his one-liners as he is for his impressive list of kills. Ashley "Ash" Williams, portrayed by cult favorite Bruce Campbell, is perhaps the one man in the genre prepared to meet him line-for-line and blade-for-blade.

The project began as fan-inspired rumors more than two years ago, as excitement built for the first pairing of Kruger and Voorhees; after production on that film was completed, New Line production exec Jeff Katz dove into a story synopsis that apparently treats all three characters with the respect that their stars - and their fans - demand. The future of the project rode on the cooperation of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, but it seems that the major wrinkles have been ironed out and final negotiations are underway.

Earlier rumors suggest that one of the carrots dangled before Raimi was the promise that New Line would finance a fourth "Evil Dead" film after the crossover, though this remains unconfirmed. However, it seems to make financial sense to reinvigorate New Line's horror stable, and Raimi would likely smile upon an agreement that would bring childhood friend Campbell into a new series of high-budget films in a starring role. Raimi is unlikely to direct, due to his commitments to the "Spider-Man" series, but is likely to receive a producer's credit once the ink is dry. His longtime partner, Rob Tappert, might take a larger part of the active film production.

Mr. Disgusting's FJA treatment review:

As you figured, I have read the script 'treatment' for Freddy vs Jason vs Ash, there were only a couple lines of dialogue, it was basically the story told in storybook form- from the beginning to the final bloody climax. If there is one thing I want you to gain from this review, it's that Freddy vs Jason vs Ash makes up for all of the mistakes in the first film (like missing Freddy kill scenes)!

I must keep this review vague, so New Line doesn't castrate me for real, and use the footage in the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre film- but I'll give you a taste of the forbidden fruits- because Mr. D wants his readers happy!

Freddy vs Jason vs Ash will be one of the greatest horror movies of all time, because the script shows that it understands the characters, the history of each backstory, the cliche's and most of all- the genre.

The most important thing that drives this amazing story is this one fact that has eluded all of our minds- the Necronomicon is in the Voorhees house! Sure you remember, it's in the basement, it appeared in Jason Goes to Hell- now it's all coming back to you, isn't it?

The movie takes place almost directly after Freddy vs Jason, when Freddy winks (yep, the wink was for a reason), the movie wasn't really over- did you really think it would be that easy after 25 years of terror? I'm not going to tell you anything more, except that this is probably one of the coolest 'comebacks' in the history of sequels.

Lets talk Ash: Hes the same old Ashley J. Williams that's been in the first three films- only he's older and sick of playing around. He's on a mission, and when he must make decisions between himself and other outside factors, he almost always chooses 'himself'- typical of Ash. He still works at S-mart and there just happens to be a new S-mart opening right by the 'new' Crystal Lake- wink wink.

Jason: He's the same kick-ass Ken Kirzinger looking Jason (a la Jason Lives, the best of the series), only there's a twist, and when you find out this twist- you are going to crap yourselves- no bull! Can you say better Friday the 13th movies in the future (no, he doesn't turn into a robot)?

Freddy: Oh Freddy is pissed this time, and we get to see more of the crazy looking demon Freddy- I'm so excited! He's tricky, cunning, and most of all sadistically funny. But this time Freddy has a new goal, which by the sound of it, is the biggest plan that he has ever concocted! You wanted a Nightmare on Elm Street movie, you got one!

One reason this movie is going to be a blast is that 2/3 of the movie looks to be as big as- or even bigger than- the battle at the end of Freddy vs Jason. The tone is even more serious, and the pace is quick. There isn't too much time explaining the history of the characters- we pretty much just get a short Ash flashback story- for the goons who've never seen an Evil Dead movie.

There is a new environment, which should quite interesting. The movie takes place around Christmas, so there's snow and ice and everyone is just so cheery!

But most of all, I love the "nods" to each franchise. There is a certain sequence that involved Ash, and the return of his cut off hand, which is by far one of the greatest ideas I've ever heard of; I yelled out loud, "NO FUC#!NG WAY!" It's so hard for me to keep this under wraps, because it is seriously so brilliant.

I promise you, I was afraid that this wouldn't work, but it does. Everything is perfectly packaged and sealed with a pretty (bloody) bow.

This is your new best friend Mr. Disgusting signing off...

Bruce Campbell talks FJA:

"Bruce Campbell, who played Ash in the Evil Dead horror films, told SCI FI Wire that there is "some validity" to the rampant rumors about the possibility of a movie that would pit his character against Freddy of A Nightmare on Elm Street and Jason from the Friday the 13th franchise. But Campbell added that nothing is imminent. "As I've been explaining to people, this wouldn't be a movie where you could just make a phone call and go, 'Let's do it,' and then it all happens," Campbell said in an interview. "You've got three franchises."

Campbell added, "That means you have 17 lawyers, each going, 'Yeah, look at my franchise. Yeah, look at my franchise.' So you have to get past that. Then you have to get past the question of 'how will the characters be treated?' What would you do with Ash? There's no way I'd be in it if I lost. No way. The good guy has to win, especially in that movie. You couldn't kill two whole franchises, but we could sure maim them."

Sam Raimi talks just a little bit about FJA and Evil Dead 4:

He isn't really giving anything away but Sam Raimi tells IESB.net, at the "Spider-Man 2" Premiere that he?d be interested in doing both an "Evil Dead 4" and a "Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash" - someday.

Says Raimi on the former, "I'd like to make another Evil Dead movie. Right now I don't have any plans to, but it would be a lot of fun".

And about Freddy vs Jason vs Ash he remarks "That sounds interesting. I'd love to read a script? if one exists".

Raimi's concentrating on getting a "Spider-Man 3" off the ground at the moment so anything else is way down the track.

Freddy vs Jason vs Ash Casting and Directing News...

Robert Englund will be back as Freddy Kruger.

Ken Kirzinger will likely reprise the Role of Jason. However, there has been some talk about CJ Graham and Kane Hodder coming in to be Jason.

Bruce Campbell will play Ash obviously.

There has been talk over at bloody-disgusting that HHH from the WWE has been rumored to be taking on a role in Freddy vs Jason vs Ash. After his success with Blade 3.

Also, on a recent Head Bangers Ball on MTV2. Chris Jericho (with his band fozzy) from the WWE said that HE WILL be in Freddy vs Jason 2. He did not say Freddy vs Jason vs Ash. Take HHH and Jericho with a grain of salt for now.

Who's Directing? Well. The best guy for the job would be Sam Raimi, but don't hold your breath. He will be busy with Spider-Man 3. NO ONE HAS BEEN CONFIRMED YET, however rumors are running ramped that Tom McLoughlin could be in the driver seat. (take that as a rumor for now)

Underworld 2: IESB writes: Producer Tom Rosenberg gave us a status report on the sequel to Underworld, which goes into production soon and may have a different title. "We start in November," Rosenberg said. "We may call it something else. We'll probably call it something with Underworld 2 [but] it's Underworld 2."

With the recent director's cut of Underworld expanding the film's mythology, Rosenberg promises that those fans will get more out of the sequel, while casual fans will still be able to follow the story. "I think the real intense followers of the whole saga will really, really love the second one. It's very intricate. It gives Selene's history, Viktor's history and then of course now Marcus is going to come out of the crypt. So it's really cool. I'm excited about it."

Of course, the action will have to evolve in the sequel. "It's much bigger action but still, we have to keep the coolness of it and not let the action overwhelm it. I like the whole world that's created and you have to stay within that world. I don't want to jam mindless nonstop action at the audience and this is going to still be story driven. But we're going to have cool sequences and some bigger action, but if you do that on a sequel, and that's what often happens, what's the point? This story is better. This story is more intricate and more interesting. That's what I really like about it."

Rosenberg also acknowledged that the success of the original allowed for one major difference on the sequel. "Well, it allowed all the actors to get paid more. Those are the chief beneficiaries of the success of it."

Tom Savini talks about his Involvement in 'Land of the Dead': The Horror Channel reports:

"During a panel at this past weekend's Rue Morgue Festival of Fear convention up in Toronto, Tom Savini gave the crowd quite an earful in terms of what his role in the 4th installment of Romero's legendary film series could be.

Picture this if you will: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of the last "living strongholds" on the planet, is completely cordoned off. Droves of hungry zombies are clawing at the city?s borders, desperately trying to get a taste of the only "fresh meat" around. The city is patrolled and protected by a tank called "The Dead Reckoning." Every tank needs a crew. Every crew needs a leader. Enter Tom Savini.

Savini is in negotiations to co-star in the film as one of the leaders of a salvage team that goes out in the Dead Reckoning to search for supplies and/or survivors. It gets more interesting than this though, folks. Savini mentioned that one of George's plans for him is to run into and kill Blades, his original character from Dawn. As you can imagine, Blades is pretty much the worse for wear and will have a bloated look as he met his "earthly" demise in a fountain some time ago.

According to Ryan's report, nothing is official right now; this is just what's on the table. George has stated that no one has officially signed onto the project as of yet except for KNB, which will be providing what I am sure will be the best Dead FX ever. Romero has also stated that he's very interested in having Asia Argento onboard for the project, but again, nothing is for sure."

'House of the Dead 2 & 3' Game Winners writes: "And it is official. Director Uwe Boll had a talk with the Official PS Magazine(OPM) that the script is pretty much done. Also, in the extras of the House of the Dead DVD, he and his partners stated that this time he wants to take a more Horror like approach but keep true to the game with action. He will also take the main characters G and Rogan and have them as the main characters in the new movie. He's looking for a 2005 release and is also looking to end the series with a third."

Critters 5 & 6, Hollow Man 2, Kumite, Dog Soldiers 2 and X Men 3 news: Bloody-disgusting.com reports:

Out of nowhere Hollow Man 2 showed up on the map with production set to run October 18th thru December 3rd 2004 at Vancouver Film Studios. Director Claudio Faeh (Coronado) is set to help his second feature with David Lancaster (Riding the Bullet, Second Skin) and Greg Malcolm (Riding the Bullet) producing. Little is known about the production or story other than it's said to be a direct sequel with a different actor taking the lead role occupied by Kevin Bacon in the Paul Verhoeven directed original. We assume this is a direct-to-DVD feature. More news to come on this film we're sure. Casting is being handled by Aikins/Cossey Casting and the production company is Frontera Productions BC, Ltd.

Kumite is now pushed back to either a late September or Early October start. Also in a very interesting turn of events famed Cinematographer Doug Milsome (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Lonesome Dove) has been listed as the director on the BC Film list. It could just be a mistake as he is slated to work on the production or maybe Jean-Claude Van Damme has thankfully backed away from the director's chair? Either way it'll be a miracle if this production gets off the ground as we've heard the film has encountered many problems with funding.

Man About Town with Ben Affleck & Rebecca Romijn-Stamos is tipped to shoot in town later this year...isn't he against filming in Canada? Or is that only when he?s campaigning for John Kerry and the Democrats?

Our sources say Joss Whedon is set to Write and Direct X Men 3 with the start date now pushed back to the Summer of 2005.

There is a very good chance Critters 5 & 6 will shoot back to back here in town later this year.

Preacher is now looking like it will shoot in Vancouver this Fall (instead of the originally planned Saskatchewan) with 1 additional week being done in either Saskatchewan or Texas.

Dog Soldiers 2 is looking like a February Start 2005 in Vancouver.

House of Wax gets pushed back: Dark Horizons reports that the Elisha Cuthbert/Chad Michael Murray horror remake House of Wax, which was originally scheduled for release this Halloween, has been massively pushed back to June 30th 2005. This puts it up against M:I-3 and "Fantastic Four", so expect this date to change again- and again- and again. Dark Castle's remake of the Vincent Price classic also stars Paris Hilton, Jared Padalecki, John Abrahams, Brian Van Holt, Emma Lung and Damon Herriman.

Dwight Little Talks Halloween 9 and more: Moviehole reports:

HALLOWEEN 9
He's asked back each and every year, says Little, to helm a new chapter in the series - but he's just not interested. Little directed "Halloween 4". "Halloween 3 Season of the Witch had gone off on a really different direction, kinda putting an end to the franchise, and then about ten years later we were asked to come in and try and come up with a way to bring Michael Myers back. And then once we kicked it off with four, then it's never stopped. Every year they come and ask me to do it. Every year I say 'Look Halloween 4, I honestly believe I did as best as I could do'. I felt so complete about it, I just wanted to leave it alone -but they've gone and done another five or something anyway. They want to bring Jamie (the character in "Halloween 4") back.

ANACONDAS 3
Little says he'll probably leave his "Anacondas" commitment at the one, but expects Sony to get going on the third instalment soon. "I don't know what they'll do for that one, but I'm almost sure there will be one".

THE LOST TRIBE
"I've got a pet project called The Lost Tribe, based on a Mark Lee novel. Which is about a place in Africa about the search for the Maji, a group whom is one of the lost tribes of Israel. It's kinda of a 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' in tone and we're just about done with the script and it's a wonderful book.

KILLING BEE
Little says he's circling another studio pic or two at the moment. "There's a wonderful project called The Killing Bee at Paramount which is just a wonderful Three of the Days Condor-like political thriller".

GUILTY PLEASURES
"A Thriller at New Line called Guilty Pleasures. They're all (all the stuff he's reading) really intriguing, but they need a little more work on the script. So it's hard to go to casting until then.
