From Dark Horizons

An intriguing quadrplet are behind a new USA Network series based on the Mary Shelley classic. Legendary director Martin Scorsese, famed horror author Dean Koontz, newly emerging director Marcus Nispel ("The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" remake) and TV producer Tony Krantz ("24", "Felicity") are behind the new weekly show to launch most likely sometime this Fall. According to Variety, USA has greenlit production on a two hour pilot and four scripts for the project, those four won't be greenlit until the pilot starts shooting but things are progressing as if the show will launch. Nispel will helm the pilot which was written by Koontz, the other three are serving as executive producers. Koontz wrote the project on spec before he pitched it to the networks, both he and Krantz want to keep as much indepedence as possible. Scorsese then came onboard, this being his "first on-air foray into scripted series television". Casting will start next week for a mid-April production start date. Story wise: "The series picks up in present-day Seattle, where doctor Victor Frankenstein and his creature reside, having survived the past two centuries through the doctor's genetic tinkering. Their story is augmented with that of a female cop and her partner who, through a seemingly standard homicide investigation, unravel the myth of Frankenstein. Skein will have close-ended elements thanks to the cop franchise, which envisions the original Frankenstein monster teaming up with the cops to battle both Dr. Frankenstein and his small army of genetic freaks".

The Ring 2 and Dark Waters

Variety reports that a solid ensemble has joined Jennifer Connelly in the cast of Pandemonium/Vertigo’s DARK WATER: John C. (CHICAGO) Reilly, Tim (PLANET OF THE APES) Roth, Dougray (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II) Scott and Pete (THE LOST WORLD) Postlethwaite co-star in the story of a woman who moves with her young daughter into a new apartment and begins experiencing aquatic signs that the place is haunted. Walter Salles is directing, and Rafael (FEARLESS) Yglesias scripted this remake of Hideo Nakata’s Japanese chiller; production is currently underway, with locations in Toronto and New York. Meanwhile, Sci Fi Wire has reported that Daveigh Chase, the evil Samara from another Nakata remake, THE RING, is returning in the soon-to-roll sequel. The young actress told the site, "I will [go back to work] soon. They’re going to start filming in March. Unfortunately, I can’t say anything about it, [but] it will definitely be horrifying. They’re waiting until the last minute [to show her the RING 2 script]. I’m pretty sure I’ll get to kill everybody again. That’ll be fun." Chase joins fellow returnees Naomi Watts and David Dorfman in THE RING 2, which Noam Munro will direct from a script by encoring Ehren Kruger.

DOG SOLDIERS: Fresh Meat

First news on DOG SOLDIERS: FRESH MEAT, the follow-up to easily one of the most refreshing werewolf movies in years, will go before the cameras in April. Budgeted at $5.5 million and scheduled for a 35-day shoot, the sequel will be shot in either Luxembourg or Canada under the direction of Andy Armstrong (an action/2nd unit director with credits including HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, NIGHTBREED and HIGHWAYMEN) from an Eric Miller script. The story is by the original’s returning producers, David E. Allen and Brian Patrick O’Toole. "The new movie begins right at the end of the first film," Allen reveals. "Cooper is picked up by an American team who, we find out, were the real opponents for the war games for Sgt. Wells’ squad. We discover more werewolves that we didn’t know about from the first movie, who may or may not be part of the family. There’s more action, more gore and there are definitely more werewolves. It’s all out in the woods again, with plenty of guns and blood." As of now, no cast has been announced, including whether actor Kevin McKidd will return to reprise the Cooper role. O’Toole offers that the approach to FRESH MEAT will be the same as on the original DOG SOLDIERS, which literally came out of nowhere to become a fan favorite and, in many critical eyes, joined GINGER SNAPS as one of the best werewolf movies since THE HOWLING and AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. “Our idea with the first film was to make it for the fans,” he says. “We made a small film about werewolves and treated it right. We didn’t put our tongues in our cheeks. We set out to make a real horror film without the SCREAM-like nudges to other films." Allen adds that DOG SOLDIERS: FRESH MEAT will definitely not be the last in this hairy saga. "We’re definitely thinking in terms of a franchise," he says. "We have a third story sitting in the background, and we also have an idea for a prequel that would tell the story of the werewolf family. But don’t look for DOG SOLDIERS IN OUTER SPACE or DOG SOLDIERS IN THE HOOD. We’ll only make these movies as long as we can stay true to the nature of what the werewolves are really all about."
