Freddy vs. Jason review

This movie has been on the cards for a very long time indeed. Any horror fan semi in the clue could tell you about this project being on hold for the best part of a decade. Script after script being rejected...until now...

Jason in Freddy's realm... Freddy VS. Jason is stylish, it is slick and it is action packed. Some of the 'kills' are incredible and the acting is probably some of the best in the slasher sub-genre! Honestly at no point during this movie did I cringe at the acting ability, Rowland was suprisingly superb in her role. As were the other young stars. While Kirzinger is nothing short of immense as Jason Voorhees. Alot of credit does have to go to the lighting and costume/prop team and Yu's vision because none of it would have looked the same without them.

With tits and ass from the offset, Jason is formidable and Freddy is cunning. The whole production is solid and the story is fast paced. Krueger looks good and the lighting and atmosphere are of a high standard througout; awesome in places for lack of a better description. It is a gem of a flick. A distinct breath of fresh air in our beloved slasher sub-genre.

Both Jason and Freddy meet a very bloody end... Contrary to many a fanboy's "nightmare", there is no doubt in my mind that Kirzinger was completely the right choice as Jason in this movie, a mere mortal could have failed in the dramatic fight sequences (only CJ Graham could have topped him for me!) because it required a 'being' such as Kirzinger to give Jason the gigantic (with big shoe soles nonetheless), but 'purest' look they needed. He resembled Jason of old i.e. Brooker except bigger and tougher. Kirzinger gave a little bit of mystery, intimidation and freshness back to the role. He was brilliant.

Moving on, the plot is very simple, but the concept is very complex. As you would expect, there are many discrepencies, but with this kind of story it cannot be avoided. A subject such as this needn't be dwelled upon. However, to briefly outline the story; Freddy uses Jason as his pawn to strike the fear back into the Elm Street kids, giving him his gateway back to his murderous ways. However Jason proves to be a handful and things kick off from there, accumulating in a...lets say..intense finale!

Lori (Monica Keenan) and Will (Jason Ritter) watch the titans clash and decide to blow them up with a propane gas explosion...but wait! Naturally, only one man can play Krueger. The character giving alot of humour to the story, but not so much as to take away from the drama. To back track a touch, at the beginning of the film it gives much welcomed flash backs to Freddy's past to inform the uninformed and please the hardened Krueger fanboy. It was nice. Not to forget the delve into Jason's past, it was part of that character building aspect that escapes many a horror flick and it was very welcome, it linked the two characters up very well.

In closing Freddy VS. Jason is sheer entertainment, not a classic masterpiece. However, it must be said that it is Freddy VS. Jason and you could say that it entertains the viewer like it should, and explains the two major characters in great detail, thus giving a great amount of personality to the said characters. Jason is the anti-hero and Freddy is the real villain as it turns out, although any false pretences are shattered in a second, and many a time too! It could be easily argued that as far as film imagery goes, Freddy VS Jason is masterful. A wonderful job has been done with the camera and the lighting, "cheap" does not fit into the equation.

See this film, now.
