The (Former) Snob

Steve's Discussion forum on Guts and Gory

One thing I never realized in all the years of doing films, TV and plays is how the fans react to your performance.

I always knew that there were fans but never interacted with them until this whole Jason thing started, again of which I never really thought would amount to anything at all except that it was a job on a low budget.

I never realized the magnitude of it all until I got involved with the fans on a one on one type basis. How they really got involved personally. I met so many in the last 3 months and found them to be very dedicated people. I always thought that they might be some strange kind of individuals with not much going on in their lives except watching horror movies. Pictured them in a dark sense I guess. Taking this all into consideration I am sure you could only imagine how I felt just going to my first convention. How would I re-act to these people I thought?

My first convention was at Chiller Theatre at the Meadowlands in April of this year, I remember pulling into the hotel parking lot and seeing a line of very different looking people standing in a very long line in the rain waiting to get into the convention.

I got out of my car and began to walk to the hotel and had to pass by those (fans) standing in the line. Some looked strange, being dressed like different creatures from different horror films and some were dressed normally. I just quite couldn't figure out why those normal people were in the line with the strange looking people; you see, I think I am normal, but in reality I am a snob--or should I say, I was a snob until I met the fans.

The people at Chiller put me at a table next to Tom Savini. I said hi to him and he returned the gesture. I asked him about the convention and how it worked. He explained what the deal was to me about the money end of it and what to expect from the fans. He was quite clear about the fans. He said they are great some strange but overall they are all great people. They are passionate about horror films and very knowledgeable about what goes on behind the scenes as well as the actors and actresses who play the roles. They're good, very good. They know they have to pay for certain things and that's okay with them. He was very helpful and made me feel much more comfortable than I did when I first arrived.

Steve Dash as Jason in FRIDAY THE 13TH, PART II

I remember my first fan, who was dressed in the strange category. She said to me that she was so happy to finally meet me. Meet me, I thought? And she proceeded to tell me of how she knew of me and Friday the 13th Part II. I sat there in amazement as she spoke of me and my performance. I was feeling like I just did Ben Hur, The Godfather or Patton, for Christ's sake. I thought for a while while she was talking, and said to myself, is she talking about the Friday the 13th movie? I thanked her for all the compliments. Then she asked me to sign a picture that I had on my table and asked the price? The price I thought, how could I possibly charge some body money that just made me feel like an Academy Award-winning actor? My brother who was with me at the table said, "That will be $15.00, please." She said "Great, can I take a picture with you?" I said sure and we did; she thanked me again and walked away.

That girl along with hundreds of other fans had the same effect on me, shocked, shocked that I could have thought of them as strange. What an ass-hole I felt like by the end of the first day.

I met wonderful people at that convention, like Morgan, Eben, Brooks the guitar guy, Jonathon and last but not least Stacie "Horror Girl." And if I forgot some of you, I'm sorry.

I sat at a table taking money, being praised and taking pictures with fans for two days. You know what the best part of it was? Talking to the fans.

Thanks All - The Snob
