The Thing

"Man is the warmest place to hide"

A cold discovery... Certainly considered one of John Carpenter's best by many a sound horror fan, this 1982 re-make of Howard Hawks' The Thing sees us to winter at a research station in Antarctica where a group of twelve from the facillity make a huge discovery in the way of an "Alien" which has apparently fallen from the sky (well, where else?) and laid dormant, buried under the snow and ice for hundreds of thousands of years...until now.

Thawed out and ready to rock n' roll, The Thing kicks off here. Starring Kurt Russell and boasting nothing short of incredible special effects by Roy Arbogast, make up by Rob Bottin and special visual effects by Albert Whitlock, you have got a movie of tremendous calibre on your hands (or screen if you like).

Russell plays MacReady, a no-nonsense researcher who comes to realize that the alien being has the ability to assume the form of anyone it pounces upon and devours. Hence, the stage is set for a claustrophobic crucible of "who's the alien" as trust crumbles and suspicions mount.

Norris once had a good head on his shoulders, but... After a series of blood tests to which all parties consent, the identity of one "thing" impersonator is revealed, only to domino into further mayhem, courtesy of Bottin. Indeed, his work on The Thing nearly garnered him an Oscar nomination, until some tight-assed Academy pedant decided that this sort of thing doesn't constitute "make-up effects." In the meantime, horror fans will enjoy some of the over-the-top setpieces Bottin has pulled off here.

Suspensful, atmospheric, hard-hitting and stomach-turning, John Carpenter's The Thing is truly another classic horror movie that we recommend to anybody!

"Horrific!"
