Thirteen Facts
About Friday The 13th Part 8 - Jason Takes Manhattan:

1. Writer/director Rob Hedden originally pitched two separate ideas to Paramount regarding the approach to this eighth installment--Jason stalking a cruise ship or Jason in the big city. Paramount encouraged him to combine both, which he did.

2. Actress Jensen Daggett, who played heroine Rennie, later auditioned for an Oliver Stone picture. She was a bit embarrassed when, looking over her resume, Stone noted, "Oh, you've done a Friday the 13th?" Incidentally, she didn't land the role in the Stone film.

3. Most of the film was shot in Vancouver to save on production costs, although the Times Square sequences were lensed in New York City.

4. The scene of the uncredited boxer being dispatched with a hot sauna rock shoved into his chest cavity was a re-shoot. Originally, the character was killed with darts through the eye sockets, but the finished shot was apparently deemed too graphic.

5. The shot of Jason "undrowning"--so to speak--at the end of the film, with water gushing from his mouth, was accomplished thanks to Kane Hodder's uncanny ability to vomit on cue. Prior to the shoot, Hodder downed a pitcher of water.

6. Timothy Burr Mirkovich, who played the Jason child during the flashback and hallucination sequences, is the son of Steven J. Mirkovich, who edited the film.

7. Fred Mollin, who had previously worked on Part II, composed and performed the entire score this time. Concurrently, he also did the music for Paramount's Friday the 13th television series, a soundtrack album of which did receive wide release.

8. Although this was the only installment in the series to feature no Harry Manfredini music, Manfredini did receive a credit during the end titles--for creating the original Jason sound effect (the "ki-ki-ki, ma-ma-ma" staple) which was used throughout the movie.

9. The release date for Part VIII was shuffled around a bit. Originally planned for Friday, 13 October 1989, it was bumped up to 4 August 1989 instead. Shortly before its debut, it was moved ahead yet another week, hitting movie screens on Friday, 28 July 1989.

10. The haunting rock track used in the opening and ending credits is "Darkest Side Of The Night" by Peter Fredette and was never been released in any purchasable form until only recently. A top-notch re-recording of the track appears on the album The Power Of The Night, a full-length release by Fredette and his partner Stan Meissner under their Metropolis monicker.

11. The original one-sheet design included Jason's knife blade ripping through an "I Love New York" poster. The New York City tourism commission objected, and the design was changed to the shot of Jason's mask overlooking the NYC skyline.

12. After a long night's shoot, a still-in-costume Kane Hodder was on his way back to his hotel room and took a wrong turn, suddenly finding himself amidst a ladies' club banquet. The ladies, however, were very intrigued when they realized there was a bona fide celebrity in their midst.

13. With a box-office take of $14.3 million, Friday the 13th, Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan was the least commercially successful chapter in the saga.
